Description

As the patches of oil on the surface of the sea merge into one another to form a continuous strip, the strip ignited at several points and the oil begins to burn. Pictures have now been released showing how Britain prepared a fiery reception for the Germans had they attempted invasion. "Oil Defences" capable of setting the Channel ablaze were evolved- billowing smoke towering above an impenetrable strip of searing flames would have met the enemy's assault craft. Behind this barrier a secondary line of inshore oil defences (known as Fougasse) was organised-this picture is one of a series taken during a demonstration of the latter.
