Description
British bomb destruction of Nürnberg, Germany, 1945.
On 2 January 1945, the medieval city centre was systematically bombed by the Royal Air Force and the U.S. Army Air Forces and about ninety percent of it was destroyed in only one hour, with 1,800 residents killed and roughly 100,000 displaced. In February 1945, additional attacks followed. In total, about 6,000 Nuremberg residents are estimated to have been killed in air raids.
The Battle of Nuremberg was a five-day battle between the forces of the United States 7th Army on one side, and Germany and Russian Liberation Army volunteers on the other during World War II. The battle saw some of the fiercest urban combat during the war and it took four days for the United States to capture the city. The battle was a blow to Germany as Nuremberg was a center of the German regime. Many rallies took place in the city and to lose the city to the Americans took a heavy toll on already low German morale.[1] Even though American forces heavily outnumbered the German forces,[2] it wasn't until 20 April, that the 7th Army took the city center. The battle devastated the city.
