The Dalai Lama is a title and line of religious leaders in gelug, an orientation within Tibetan Buddhism. Dalai Lama is considered a manifestation of bodhisattvan Avalokiteshvara, bodhisattvan of compassion. Avalokiteshvara is also the protection patron of Tibet. A common misconception is that the Dalai Lama is the highest leader in gelug, but that is not the case. The leader in Gelug is the leader of the Gandenklostret, which holds the title Ganden Tripa. However, Dalai Lama has had a lot of religious and political influence.
The Panchen Lama, sometimes called Panchen Rimpoche or Tashi Lama, is the second highest leader in Gelug School in Tibetan Buddhism. He has his seat in the palace Trashilhünpo in Shigatse.
