The Grand Gallery of painting in the Louvre Museum, Paris reopens
The Grand Gallery of painting in the Louvre, empty like most of the great museum in Paris. It was in this gallery that the Mona Lisa was on display. When the Germans invaded France, the national art treasures were buried in hidden places throughout the country and during the four years occupation, the museum was either closed completely or in constant fear of losing its few remaining pieces.
Members of the French underground took maps to London showing the location of the buried treasures that they might escape unnecessary bombing. With the liberation Paris August 25, 1944, and the Allied sweep across France on the heels of the retreating Germans, French patriots began digging for statues and paintings, swathed in burlap and wood, to send them back to the Louvro for it's reopening.
